Made in the Image of God
In Genesis 1:27 it says,
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (NIV)
This verse is so simple, yet it is so profound. Each child is made in the image of God. Every kid is a resemblance of God. I love what Reggie Joiner, founder and CEO of the Re-Think group says,
“Every kid has the divine capacity to reason, to improve, to lead, to care, to relate, to trust, to believe, to imagine, to love.”
It can be so easy for us to forget that our kids are made in the image of God. They get on our nerves, they whine, they cry. Kids will back talk. They fight with their siblings. The sin that they are born with is the thing we often see. We look past the image of God our kids were created in.
The disciples missed it to one day. Parents were bringing their kids to Jesus one day so that he could pray for them and lay hands on them and the disciples got on their case for bothering Jesus.
Jesus responds to by saying,
“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me.” Mark 9:37 (NIV)
I like how Reggie Joiner did his own translation saying, “
I want you to treat kids like you treat me.” – Jesus
We need to remember to see Jesus in kids and not focus on their sin. We can’t expect kids to to follow Jesus until we treat each kid like they are made in the image of God.
