Big Questions
Kristina Zook

While in the car the other day, my oldest daughter shared a tough thought with me. “Mom, I know you and Dad love me so, so much that sometimes it’s hard to believe that God loves me more than that.” Or, how about this one from a couple months back? “Mom, why did God even let death happen?”
I don’t know about you, but I tend to freeze for a moment when bigger curiosities arise about God and faith. I say a quick prayer that goes something like “Dear Jesus, please don’t let me mess this one up.” I always try to tenderly encourage and speak into my kids …even when the answer is, “I don’t know.” In the end, it all works out but I am always left wondering if I could have done better or said something more impactful.
However, I take heart in knowing two things.
1. God will give me the words to say when I ask Him for help.
2. God is leading my kids on their very own faith journey.
While my husband and I may hold the responsibility for our children’s spiritual growth in this world, we are not alone. God has a plan for our girls and a path of exploration and questions just designed for them. He will be guiding them and us along the way.
It is so encouraging to watch God work through the moments of, “I don’t know.” It is such a beautiful reminder that He doesn’t need us to share our faith or even have half the answers but He has invited us into parenting so that we, too can witness His work through our kids. He has entrusted us with His creations and He is able to do infinitely more then we can fathom.
So, the next time your child asks the big questions, remember that you don’t have to speak perfectly or say the exact right thing. Just say a prayer and remember God has already worked it all out. Take a moment to enjoy the blessing it is to watch them work out their faith.

Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.
Ephesians 3:20
