Letting Go. Letting God.
Kristina Zook

As a parent it is easy to focus on what I want for my children. Safe, kind, Jesus loving children. It is easy to express my love for God and pray for my children’s safety and character. It is not so easy to let go and let God provide them opportunities to grow.  Releasing some control and surrendering to God doesn’t “feel” safe sometimes but are they not the safest in the care of our Creator?
This is perhaps one of the hardest things for me as a parent and a person. It takes a lot or courage to release our kids into the world or situations where there are “unknowns” or “what ifs.”  However, are we not called to have courage and be strong?
A good example/lesson of this for me this year was Kids Camp. Having never experienced an overnight camp, there were a lot of “unknowns” and “what ifs” running through my head both as a parent and as a ministry leader.
I had the privilege of attending Kids Camp this year. God truly opened my eyes to what He can do in a kids’ life to grow them in an environment where He is present among them and their peers. While I am not certain that I would have had the faith it took to send my girls there without me, I can say that I was blown away by what He did in spite of my doubts.
Not only did I witness my oldest daughter’s growth but I also witnessed many other kids grow in their relationship with Christ. A growth that may not have been possible had they not experienced the freedom that their parents had granted them to explore their faith and build community without them present.
It was a good reminder to me not to hold onto my kids too tightly and to leave room for God to work in their lives. God wants what is best for our kids and as much as it is hard to admit, He knows what that is better than we do.
Father God, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit,
Thank you for your endless grace! Thank you for your infinite wisdom and the goodness you bring into the world Lord! Thank you for the gift of my children and the privilege I have to parent them. Lord Jesus, I pray that you will help me to hold my children with open hands and not hold on to them too tightly. Please help me to remember that you are at work in their lives too and have the perfect plan for them! Your plans are far better than my own Lord. Guide them, I pray, into your loving arms so that they might experience the hope and love that comes with your presence. Be with us I pray.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
