Words Revived
Kristina Zook

My oldest who is typically full of joy and loves school had a complete look of sadness and defeat when I picked her up from school the other day. When I asked her what happened she was hesitant to tell me. Then, after a little prodding and with tears in her eyes, she opened her heart to me.

It had been “Superhero Day” at school, a day she had looked forward to for a while. She was fully geared up in a batman outfit and cape. But there was a little boy. He kept tugging on her cape and while that hurt her, what came next was a wound she will likely remember and it came in the form of words. “You look ugly in that thing; you should take it off.”

My heart broke for my 4th grader who wants nothing more than to show love and be loved and accepted. You could tell by the look in her eyes that she was devastated.

I realized right then and there the importance of filling our children with Truth. Words can be harsh but God’s word has the power to revive and restore what the world has broken. God’s truth is a necessity in combating the lies the world will throw at them.

As adults, it is difficult to combat those lies. The “You’re too_____” or “Not Enough______” can be silently heard in most advertisements these days. In a world where contentment is fleeting, it is so vital that we find our worth in Jesus and point our children to do the same.

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

The Hebrew word for “Train” is “Chanak” which also means to dedicate or inaugurate. I love this! By teaching our children the word of God we are dedicating them to God. We are starting them off with the tools they will need to explore their identity and learn about who they are in Christ. This way, when that little boy or girl uses the word “ugly,” our children can remember who they are and more importantly, whose they are, and know that there is nothing more beautiful than to be a child of God.
