What Your Kids Need Most
Josh Davis

I am days away from meeting my first child and getting to be part of bringing him into the world. I am extremely excited, but nervous. There are so many things that I feel like I am unprepared for. Having a new baby who is completely reliant on you for its survival is a big deal! There are so many things that he is going to need me to do. Things like change him, bathe him, keep him comfortable and clothed, and of course feed him (well not me, but my wife). As he grows his needs will change. One day he is going to need me to teach him things like how to drive, how to shave, and pay bills.
One thing won’t change though, his need for love. Our kids will always need love. Love from parents. Love from friends. Love from God. Love is important in the life of a child. As a parent, you have the most potential to influence your child through your love. It’s universal for every child. It’s something that any parent can give better than anyone else.
With each week that slips by, there are opportunities to demonstrate the one thing every kid needs: love. How we love our kids, while they are kids, will impact them for the rest of their lives. You are the person that is best positioned for your child to understand what being loved unconditionally is like. You’re the person best positioned to demonstrate to your child how God loves his people.
You get the opportunity to show your love by the words you speak to your child. You show your love by inviting people to invest in their lives. You show your love by the stories you tell them, by the games you play with them, by the time you invest in them. Carey Nieuwhof wrote a great article about 5 ways to prove your love for your child. As your children grow, the ways you show your love changes, but they will always need love.
What are you going to do this week that intentionally shows your child your love them?
