If You Want to Get Better, Ask Someone to Help
For you spiritual leaders out there, where are you getting help to improve your skills and learn? Most of us want to get better. So how do you do that? Well, books help, but they aren’t enough. The Bible way is getting help from people with skin on. My advice is: don’t be shy, ask someone you admire, who has done it well, to help you.
Through the twenty years I have pastored here at Horizon I have asked, at different times, the following men and all of them have coached or mentored me in a significant way: Earl Book, Dick Foth, Dary Northrup. All helped me, and right now my friend Troy Jones is helping me become a better pastor. I prayed and then I asked, and at some level for an extended period of time, they all helped.
They answered my questions, spoke into issues I was dealing with and helped me craft new strategies to bless the sheep and reach my community for Jesus. So pray and ask and believe that God will give you someone too.
